High Flight by John Gillespie McGee, Jr.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

June 14, 2013   Graduation Day at the Cottage

Mike slept peacefully though the night. When I awakened, I held his hand and whispered, once again, how much I love him. I told him that I would be ok, that he had taken such good care of me. He was breathing slow and gently. He was relaxed and resting.

Then, I joined my brother for breakfast. When I went back in, Mike's earthly life was over. In whatever reality exists in heaven, he is now walking and laughing with his own father, my father, sister Janelle, and he's running to the arms of his Savior.

So, join us in thanking our God! Mike is soaring on the Highest Flight.

  2. Lynne,

We are thinking of you and your family right now and we will miss our friend very much. He gave us so much and asked very little in return. Mike, thank you for your friendship.

  8. As the gospel song writer has penned:

    "A great day is coming
    Heaven's gates will open wide
and all who love the Lord will enter in
To join with their loved ones
Who in Jesus Christ have died
Their eternal life in heaven will begin

"And the Lord himself will greet us
Oh what joy will fill that day
When with the voice of the proudest father
He'll look at us and say

"Welcome home children this is the place I've prepared for you
Welcome home children now that your work on earth is through
Welcome home children ye who have followed so faithfully
Welcome home children, Welcome home children!
Here where I am you shall always be, Forever rejoicing with me!"

May the God of All Comfort fill your heart and mind full of the fond memories that are but a foretaste of the eternal life to come when you, dearest Lynne, are reunited with your beloved, Mike.

May you sense the loving arms of the Holy Spirit holding you close. May He give you peace in your heart and the sure assurance of His abiding love.

  11. Lynne,
I am so sorry for your loss and for ours, as Mike's passing creates a hole for those of us who knew him and loved him. However, I have to rejoice that his body is now completely whole again and I thank God that we have the hope of knowing that we will all be reunited again one day.

After seeing you this morning, I have to say that God's peace and comfort absolutely radiated from you. You looked so beautiful and so at peace. Praise God for that, for there is no peace like that which our Lord gives.

Continuing to pray -- just praying differently, now that Mike is gone. My heart aches for your children as well -- knowing that there will be a constant reminder every year at Father's Day that this was the time of year when their loving daddy passed away.

You and Mike have been such an inspiration to us through this journey. I have loved being able to read of your very special love for each other --such a beautiful relationship you had. It has touched me deeply as I've read your blog. Such sweet, tender stories of things you have done for each other. What a true inspiration it has been. Your love for each other and your love for the Father has shown through and inspired us all.

  16. Mike was a good man who did many good deeds unknown to others. He was always nice to me. I enjoyed his humor and outlook on life. You are both very special people. He will be greatly missed by not only those close to him, but those who had the pleasure of making his acquaintance. A candle has went out in this world, but Heaven is a little brighter. May God be with you and the family during this difficult time.

  19. Your husband was a strong man. I met him only through his video when he first found out that he was sick. Though I personally don't know you or your husband, I have gotten to know you both through your blog. My heart is heavy for you tonight, but please know that you and your husband were truly witnesses for God. Your story touched me and blessed me. I am a stranger who weeps with you, and also shares your belief in God. I will pray for you in the following weeks. God Bless You.
